Kathy, cristata growing wild here runs its stolons above ground. I wouldn't
mess with it.
Also, keep in mind that cristata drops its leaves in the winter ... so you
won't embarrass yourself as I did by complaining loud and long to a local
guru that El Nino had killed my babies. Wouldn't you know it, the plants
came miraculously back to life as soon as Spring returned. Then I had to
admit I didn't know nothin'. Hate that.
