Kathy, I just found my "clump" of I cristata (It has 4 small fans)
yesterday. One of the fans is attached by a slim stem and a small
rhizome with nearly invisible hairs to the rest of the rhizome.
I've just worked out that the stem should be above ground and the
rhizome should be anchored to the ground until its roots grow.
