A swale is a minor waterway.  In cross section a
swale is a broad, flattened ditch with a gentle
slope to its sides.  One can easily plant a lawn
across them or even plant water loving plants in
the bottom of many of them as long as the contour
of the land isn't changed very much.  I remember
from some of my Ag. courses that they often
called them "sod waterways."
