TB: THORNBIRD

Greetings:

Anent the question of why THORNBIRD won the Dykes I will say that I have seen
it on several show benches and in several gardens around here, some with less
than ideal soil and less than ideal growing conditions and it has looked
splendid every time. I have seen it with long violet horns, and with spoons,
and with short violet horns. All have been beautiful. The color is amazing and
sophisticated and the growth is strong.

The photograph on the cover of the October, 1997 AIS Bulletin looks like
THORNBIRD to me, but it does not, in my opinion, do the bloom justice. The
color of the photo is too subdued, and too blue, and my own impression is that
the bloom is not fully open, or if open, that the form is not characteristic.
All in all, the THORNBIRD I know is a more distinguished looking iris.
