Well, Anner, I have only seen THORNBIRD in Don and Ginny Spoon's
Winterberry Gardens, and my reaction was "blah". I wondered what the big
deal was. So, perhaps it is an iris the quality of whose bloom is quite
dependent upon local growing conditions. And obviously, it grew
pleasingly for those who made the decision to award it the Dykes. But,
however that may be, it is wonderfully refreshing to hear someone use
the word "anent". It has been, literally, decades since I have seen that
word used, and its appearance is most welcome.
