Yes, it certainly is possible to propagate by dicing up a rhizome. Afew years ago
we had a pile of surplus rhizomes and I decided to run them through the compost
shredder and spread the output on the vegetable garden. The following spring we
had the most wonderful carpet of little irises you could imagine. They were so
thick that weeds could hardly compete.
On the other hand, I am not sure that it would be a cost effective method for
commercial propagation. You do not have a lot to show for a years growth.
