Hi Janet and Shan:
Kathyguest here in the beautiful Buffalo burbs where spring is well-advanced
and I've never seen forsythia bloom so long and so well.
Interesting question you pose... I'd be interested in the background - BUT, I
digress......
In a message dated 98-04-22 23:33:35 EDT, you write:

>1. How much are your club membership dues ?
We do not have separate club dues - and that's the case throughout our region.
A few of the clubs who publish a local newsletter do ask for a small
subscription of $3 or $5 (I think, I'm not even positive about that), but our
bylaws state that "any member of AIS shall become a member of ESIS without
payment of further dues"...
So we need to be creative for funding
>2. Is your club affiliated with the AIS ?
Our region is set up differently than most. Currently we have two affiliates
and all the clubs belong to the affiliates.
>3. Is AIS membership a requirement for club membership ?
Not exactly, but there really isn't another entry.
>4. Are there any tangible benefits (free iris, discounts, etc.) to club
>membership ?
Yes.... we do believe that membership comes with privileges - besides for the
obvious (invitation to tours, sales, programs and the like), we offer free
irises to new members, a members-only auction in the summer, access to our
acquisition program where the club purchases new intros for growing on in
someone's garden, and anything else that we can think of. We offer group
purchasing on books, plant labels, fertilizers and Cygon. We keep our members
advised of what's happening in the growing community for all kinds of plants
by publishing a local newsletter which contains articles of interest and a
'green calendar'.
As for AIS benefits, there's the judges program, the very excellent Bulletin,
the conventions and meetings...
We try to craft our club so that it would be a place where we'd like to be a
member. We work hard at AIS membership because we believe that membership is
a privilege.
