I am responding for the Clara B. Rees Iris Society, we are in
San Jose, California and
this is the clubs 41st year.
1. How much are your club membership dues ?
$5 single, $7 family
> 2. Is your club affiliated with the AIS ?
Yes, we have 65 AIS members, which is just over half of the
total.
> 3. Is AIS membership a requirement for club membership ?
No, and there is encouragement but no PRESSURE.
> 4. Are there any tangible benefits (free iris, discounts, etc.) to
club
> membership ?
The cost of membership barely covers the cost of our monthly
newsletter
(I know because I am the editor)
We have a meeting during most months, the content varies.
Each meeting contains some new business/old business the program
varies - some examples for the past year:
- slide show/talk
- mini show (practice iris show and judging)
- iris auction/sale of PCI
- iris auction/sale for other beardless
- picnic and Bearded Iris auction
- rhizome sorting party prior to public sale
Most night meetings have a doorprize giveaway by drawing. The
club
purchases new intro's and selected members grow them on the first year.
The assumption is that there will be 2 increases on each to giveaway as
door
prizes. This year we have 14 iris to giveaway each meeting - last year
it was more like 20, the difference is due to the rising cost of
Introductions.
Basically 10% of the people do 90% of the work. We are fortunate
to have
several very generous members who grow thousands of iris and donate them
for sales etc. The Iris sales are the only source of significant revenue
for the club.
Though growers such as Joe Ghio and Bill Maryott have been
full time members in the past they are not now, and no current members
are
more than iris hobbyists. Many growers are very generous to clubs that
order iris
from them and this helps out with the budget.
