Paul Tyerman.. where are you?
How come the silence on the list of late? Has it been school holidays and
the competition for the computer? Or just the fact that we have had some
much needed rain making weeding much easier. Joy Wilson, iris grower, in
Yarrawonga has had approx. 3 inches of rain and reports that the family
dairy farm is greening up again after costly hand feeding the cows.
Couldn't have come at a better time because the Inland Region Iris Society
in Yarrawanga just planted up the main street with iris beds. Joy along
with Jack Roberts from Melbourne are off to the Denver Convention next
month. Jack once took me to visit an aril breeder with a fantastic
collection in Melbourne. He also spoke of a doctor in Canberra with a
similar love of arils going back some years now. Jack is asking about down
there in Melbourne and he will let me know. I purchased a collection of
arilbred iris probably about 15 years ago and being a dyed in the wool T.B.
fanatic heaved them all out after they bloomed with apologies to all aril
lovers.
Not much happening in my aussie garden other than a great autumn display of
roses, chrysanthemums ( falling all over the iris) and a few nerines. I
planted a swagbag of Louisiana iris from Rainbow Ridge last week after
finding a boggy (if such a thing exists up here) spot in the garden adding
some compost, sand and sulphur to the soil. May be another addition to my
list of great garden follies such as trying to grow a regal poinciana tree
here.
Have fellow Aussies been rising early to observe the great display of
Venus? Jupiter? and the moon in the eastern sky until well after sunrise?
At 4am yesterday I had to get the binoculars to assure myself these things
weren't (sadly) anything other than planets. Perhaps that explains the good
rainfalls throughout the country. Here in north west Victoria we could do
with more than the 70 points we received.
Dianne, Sunraysia on a cool and sunny Autumn morning.
