I have to add my two cents here. 5 weeks ago I had to do some major surgery
on a dozen or so rzs due to rot caused by deep freeze. For those rzs where
I had to remove the front piece of the rz with the main fan, there are now
lots and lots of new fans forming on the sides. Some new fans are "magically"
appearing a few inches from the cut rz.
This seems to support that chopping up a rhizome induces dormant buds to
sprout new fans.
