Re: (actually Andy) Sea Shadows (more)

Andy,

Thanks. This is pretty close so it's probably just responding to the
growing conditions.

  Do you

The others I tried were put in a specially prepared bed filled with
topsoil,
composted manure, peat moss, etc. Very rich in organics. I watered
these nearly every day the first year and yes, they got some taller, but
none as tall indicated. This was in full sun and the pseudacorus and
LA were agressive. Last year we remodeled and the bed was neglected
compared to what it was accustomed. The JIs and SIBs were gone or
marginal by the end of summer. I am currently salvaging some of the
SIBs and putting them in locations with more shade and more of the
natural clay soil. I can take shorter if they are hardier. The other bed
will be given totally to the LAs since it did so well.

One JI has survived. I need to move it this fall. Any suggestions on
helping it make it long term? I was really surprised when it reappeared
this spring.

Yes, this helps many things here as well. The problem here is that it also
attracts armadillos which then proceed to destroy the planting by digging
it up in the Texas heat. This can be fatal overnight here. I',m having
major
problems with them now, as usual.
