There has been quite a lot of discussion about yellow Dutch irises and
their availability. I thought that it would be useful to list the
various colours of "Spanish" irises, which are those in the subgenus
Xiphium, and includes the Dutch irises. I am taking this information
from Mathew as the BIS monograph has much smaller print and my glasses
are on the other side of newly washed floors, which I am banned from
crossing!
I. boissieri deep violet-purple
I. filifolia rich red-violet with yellow strip
I. juncea bright yellow
I. latifolia blue, violet, purple or white and never yellow
This is the so called English Iris
I. serotina violet-blue with a yellow line
I. tingitana pale to deep blue
I. xiphium blue or violet, with a orange or yellow blotch, sometimes
yellow or white
This is the so called Spanish Iris
In addition, there are crosses ofI.xiphium and tingitana, sometimes with
latifolia, which are called Dutch irises. These range in colour from
yellow, bronze, pale blue, to violet or deep mauve. These are the
irises that you usually buy in the flower shops as cut flowers.
At least, that gives some background to the discussion on yellow Dutch
irises.
Ian, in Ottawa where the weather is beautiful and sunny with cool
nights. Everything is growing exceptionally well and I have both
bucharica and magnifica flowering.
