Mark
you mentioned the irises at the Kanapaha Botanical Garden in
Gainesville. My experience there was similar to yours. Firstly, the
pseudacorus must be the biggest in the world. I guessed eight foot
high! Secondly, whilst photographing the Louisiana irises at the other
end of the gardens, I suddenly saw a large alligator on the other side
of the plant, with it eye fixed right on me. I had already shot about
half a roll. I usually end my iris talks with one of those photographs
because there is an excellent picture of the alligator, which I had not
seen as I was focusing on the flower. It illustrates one of the
"dangers" irisians experience. I have experienced crocs in Africa but
just did not think that there were similar threats in Florida. Once
reminded of the fact, my zoological training clicked in and I became
much more careful!
Ian, in Ottawa where Christy's seeds are germinating very rapidly. She
must have a especially fertile stock out there in Washington. May be it
is the sheep manure.
