Hi
Went to Vancouver Wa yesterday to see the early bloom show. That area,
Greater Portland (Oregon) had been blasted with hail and high winds for the 2
previous days so there were quite a few blossums with bumps and bruises & it
was a fairly small show. Aitkins had 2 tables full of display medians. Keith
Kepple was the big winner. both Best of Show and Best Seedling. Now this is
the sort of part, I negected to write down what won- Will Plotner where are
you?
If any of you went to the National in Portland 4 ys ago, the landscape
in the surrounding area is in about the same bloom as it was as we bused
around. The dogwood, wild plum, the weeping cherry- maybe one more week it
will be right there. What I'm really saying is that they are a bit ahead in
bloom also, no wild iris clumps along the road side yet.
One of the highlights for me always is to visit with old friends, and
meeting a few new friends. Mr & Mrs George Sutton accompanied by Mr & Mrs C E
C Bartlett
must have made a wild turn as they were driving around California viewing what
they discribed as the most PCN growing wild than they had ever seen before.
Anyway they ended up at the show as well as surprise guests who got put to
work judging and clerking where needed. (Mr Bartlett is President of the
Brittish Iris Society)
Then a short visit to the Silverbergs & their display garden. Some of
Kaspericks iris were in bloom there. I'm starting to take notes on notable
iris for the symposium and for our regions Carol Lankow Award- for best median
less then 10 yrs from introduction.
Keith Kepple had some to die for seedlings being judged. It was really
difficult to choose which 1 to call "best". My 2 entries were not all that
good. We had ice on the car as we left our home about 175 miles north. I
showed Fallen Plums (Marchant 90) PCI ; beet root purple with dark blue violet
blend on f. and I japonica which after placing on the table decided to wilt
but one more bud did open and was a decent display for guests of the mall.
