Kelly,
As you have chosen to try your hand at growing Siberian and Spuria irises,
I thought it might be helpful to suggest some sources for these types of
iris that I have bought from with satisfaction.
Aitken's Salmon Creek Gardens
608 NW 119th St.
Vancouver, WA 98685
$2 for color catalog. This is a top notch, very professionally run
commercial source for nearly all types of iris. They have a nice selection
of Siberians and a few Spurias, too. They tend to ship early, which is an
advantage for us in the Rocky Mountain region. There is an on-line catalog;
you can find the address on Tom Little's homepage or in the Iris-l
Archives.
Chehalem Gardens
PO Box 693
Newberg, OR 97132
Price list available on request. These folks (the Abregos) are a daughter
and son-in-law of the Schreiner family of bearded iris fame. They are
specialist growers of Siberian and Spuria iris only. When I ordered from
them I received high quality stock, but it was shipped later than I would
have preferred. If you order, you might make a point of requesting early
shipment.
Shepard Iris Garden
3342 W. Orangewood
Phoenix, AZ 85051
Color catalog for two first class stamps. These folks are probably the most
active introducers of new Spuria varieties. Good quality stock and timely
shipment, too.
Again, there are no doubt many other good sources out there, but I have
only mentioned the ones I have first hand experience with. Besides, if you
can find good suppliers of what you are looking for in the West, there is
really no point in looking further afield - especially with iris like these
that do not like to be out of the ground for an extended length of time.
Good luck and happy iris hunting!
