This is really off the wall, but I remember hearing that boats are often now
painted with hot pepper based paints (cayenne, habenero, etc.) because the
barnacles find it distasteful and won't grow there.

I wonder if some sort of pepper spray applied to irises at the time borers
are laying eggs would cause them to seek out other places?  We need to get
AIS to sponsor some university studies on alternative borer treatments.  Do
you know if they've ever attempted it in the past?
