How many iris are there?  Many, many thousands.  Too many to count, 
more than any garden could ever contain  (although, wouldn't you like 
to see a garden like that?).  Several hundred new ones are normally 
introduced every year, though fortunately for the collecting 
gardener, many are not all that different from existing varieties you 
may already have.
