Dennis, you are not picking an expert in asking me a question! I've read
that if pollen is there and looks fluffy and yellow, it is fertile. That
doesn't mean that all of your crosses with it will take. Not all iris are
pod fertile even though they all have stigmatic lips! Sharon wrote and told
me a bit about pollen analysis. She said that dead pollen under a
microscope looks like exploded textured balls; good pollen looks like
textured balls. She also said there is such a thing as partially fertile
pollen. It is not uniform in texture and looks like it has more chaff in
it. (she used a quarterbred as an example). She says tet pollen is
noticeably larger than diploid pollen and triploid pollen is a mixture of
pollen sizes denoting the diploid and tetraploid mix!
So what does all that mean? Well, if it looks fluffy to you, use it!
Cindy
