I'm concerned that some people may read this and take the concept too far in
their minds.
Ploidy cannot be invariably be determined by looking at the plant. There are
some very large diploid TBs, for instance the pink pallida THAIS, or DOGROSE,
and there are some small tetraploid TBs, such as KING TUT. In my mind the
classic diploid TB for comparison purposes would be QUAKER LADY.
The concept of the "Table Iris" was formed by Mrs. Peckham, editor of the
1939 AIS Check List, on a visit to E. B. Williamson's garden. She noticed
some intriquing dainty plants in the fields and thought something might be
made of them. She first published the term in an article in the January, 1929
AIS Bulletin. The type of the class is the very fine white PEWEE.
