"Broccoli residue" in my compost heap acts as a fumigant which keeps humans
away. I grew up in a cabbage-farming region, and the odor of the rotted
remnants of the cabbage when the fields thawed in spring was extremely
powerful and nauseating. I can well believe that it would drive away
nematodes and kill seeds--probably also make birds drop out of the sky.
