I ripened a pod on a broken stalk this summer by putting the stalk in a vase of water.  Since buds mature and open in a vase, I thought why not pods, and it worked.

  If the stalk gets broken or whatever:  Here's my one-cents ' worth on this!  
  Many years ago I heard a discussion on this -- and "they" said to stick the 
  stalk in a potato (irish, white, I am sure)   I think that was to provide the 
  necessary moisture to keep the stalk alive long enuf for the seeds to ripen.
  Om second thoughts, I'll charge only a Confederate  ha'penny for this,
