Re: AIS: Humble Symposium Suggestion

I looked up Symposium in the Thesaurus in MS Word and one of they synnonyms is "assembly". The symposium is definitely an assembly of many award winning irieses.

I do not think this is what was meant when the name for it was chosen, for I am sure assembly with regards to symposium means a gathering of people.

Does anyone on iris-talk know how it got its name and why?

Main Entry: sym.po.sium
Inflected Form(s): plural sym.po.sia /-zE-&, -zh(E-)&/; or -siums
1 a : a convivial party (as after a banquet in ancient Greece) with music
and conversation b : a social gathering at which there is free interchange
of ideas
2 a : a formal meeting at which several specialists deliver short addresses
on a topic or on related topics --
The Symposium discussion has hardly been a party...
