I find setting a pod has alot to do with the day or time of day. 
There's some days when I get a very low ratio of takes and other days
when everything I cross sets a pod.  This may be a humidity issue.

My technique requires no equipment, I pull the antler with my fingers
and rub the it directly on the deepest part of all three stigmatic lips.
No equipment means that nothing gets lost in the garden.  I must admit
that I prefer my nice set of bent pollen forceps but I just can't find
them ;-)

Thornbird has the most potent pollen I've ever seen but this would be of
little  use in your blue bearded pink program.
