I just got back from some time with my daughter in San Diego to find
over 300 messages in my inbox. I found, in reading through the iris-talk
messages (most of the messages were from the lists), that I thought it
was time to review some of the policies that I think help to keep
iris-talk a friendly place. I am not picking on anyone in particular,
don't assume that I am. I think it just helps to keep some things in the
forefront of everyone's awareness to review things once in a while.
Potentially Offensive Subjects. Do not post anything with political or
religious content, even if there is some tenuous connection with irises.
Some people have very strong feelings on these topics, and there is no
reason to risk starting a heated debate over something that is rather
clearly off-topic to begin with. By the same rationale, avoid using
profanity, even in jest.
Humor. Be wary of trying to make jokes. Sometimes what you thnk is funny
doesn't come across that way to others. remember that you don't have all
the visual clues that people use and intrepret what you say.
When you write a message, avoid making judgemnets about other people or
their comments. Certainly, express your opinion, but keep it to that.
Examine your emotions as you type. If you're "worked up" over the
message you're replying to, don't send. Wait a day and think it over.
Remember that what you really want to do is communicate. You want people
to read what you have to say. Make it easy for them.
Subject Lines. CHECK the subject line before you send, even if you are
replying to a previously posted message. If the subject line accurately
reflects the content of your message, leave it alone! If it doesn't,
change it!
Junk Mail. Do not post messages that are circulating through the
internet at large. This includes virus warnings, humor, chain letters,
charity appeals, etc. This is not the place for them.
