Which was around the time of the discussion on using saliva to moisten the
stigmatic lip, to aid pollenation. When the humidity is very low, as it
often is in this part of Australia during the hottest months of summer, the
stigmatic lip dries out quickly, and pollen grains dry out before
pollenation can occur. Working early in the morning helps, and moistening
the stigmatic lip also helps in my experience.
Someone suggested squeezing the stigmatic lip closed gently. I have also
found this useful, but have not been very scientific in documenting results.
Bill might like to look in the Mallorn archives for the thread on using
saliva in pollenation. Lots of humour there to keep your brain alive Bill!
Cheers, Jan in cheerless Aus late winter, Spring is never going to come.
