Actually, to calibrate a pH meter, and do it right, you should calibrate it
at pH 4.0. pH 7.0 and pH 10.0. Solutions are sold just for this purpose.
Also, you should look for a meter that has a replaceable probe as then you
can just replace the probe and not the whole meter. The probes really do
not last that long, at least with the pH meters I am familiar with.

I'm presently using a meter from Brookstone called "Plant Smart". Cost about
$25. Has a digital read out. Runs on 9 volt battery. Has automatic off. It
has reliable pH measuring capacity. It also has two other features which I
have little use. It will measure both light level and moisture level. Two
features good for house plants. I have in the past used less expensive
meters
with meter read out available a Lowe's and found them acceptable but short
lived.
The most accurate method I've found for measuring pH is Baker-pHIX test
strips from J.T. Baker company. Change in strip color is compared to a color
chart. I do not know a convenient source for these strips.
The functionality and accuracy of both the meters and the test strips are
improved by mixing a slurry of the subject soil and distilled water
(available from the grocery store) and measuring the pH of the slurry.
Distilled water is the simplest way to test/calibrate measuring devices.
They
should indicate distilled water has a pH of 7.0
Bored and tortured cause typin' stuff devoid of humor prevents the creation
of free hydrogen ions in my brain (lowers the pH) .
