Using the online iris register, which has the '79 and '89 Checklist data,
I pulled up the registrations for Opal and Melba during those years.
There were 106 registrations for Opal and 163 for Melba. The ones
that grew and bloomed well for me were:
BLUE LUSTER, Brown R. '73
FULL TIDE, Brown R. '72
GYPSY PRINCE, Hamblen R. '73
INFINITE GRACE, Hamblen R. '81
RAGTIME, Hamblen R. '82
In other decades outside of the range of the online checklist,
Opal was responsible for WINTER OLYMPICS, a Dykes
Medal winner. It grew well for me in Texas. I still see it
at sales locally but have not inquired about how it grows or blooms
here. My biggest disappointment with Brown irises was that I
could not grow QUEEN OF HEARTS. It really showed off in
the Crumpler garden at the Roanoke Convention.
Melba was responsible for the great ORANGE PARADE, which was
a good grower also. OP was partly responsible for AHEAD OF
TIMES, Hinkleman. It always rebloomed on July 4th for me.
I saw Melba's POTPOURRI at the Lansing Convention and took a chance
on it, but it died before blooming. That was a big disappointment
because it was such a knock-out of an iris, and I gave it all of the
TLC I could. I look at the slide of it every once-in-awhile and
wonder why it didn't like my garden.
I am thankful for the faraway irises that do well for me. Some
day I may tell you about the French and Australian irises I grow.
