Four years ago I sprayed Cygon one time in the spring. I had been fighting borers for several years.  From the list I learned about the clean up. I tried it and have not seen a borer or borer damage since. It is about 150 yards to the nearest iris growing in my area.
The borer moth lays it eggs on the dead material. If you remove it they don't have a place to lay them that they like. It works for me.

  fall? are you also saying that if you remove the leaves you don't need to  
  use merit or cygon? what does "IMHO" mean? i don't understand. sorry to
