Neil replies--

In Western Idaho in late May the humidity was rarely above 30% during
iris bloom season except early some mornings. We had Taylor
Instruments Hygro-thermographs in the orchards, so could track
conditions there.

Typically, the daytime percentage as I recall was lower than that on
most days, more like 20%. My experience there was about the same as
here--the condition of the stigma and the pollen were what was
important, not so much the weather. Fresh blooms, fluffy pollen have
their own humidifiers built in. There is a microclimate within the
well-protected part of the flower were the pollen makes contact that
raises the chances for sucess.

I should add that my garden in both locations there was up against
desert areas, with oncoming air quite dry.

I do recall that crosses made fairly early in the mornings had higher
percentages of takes than those made later--same as here. I rarely
exceeded 50% takes. There were days when nothing took. But I find
that true in NC also. Here, the factor is wet heat--just as
destructive as dry heat if not more so.

Sharing just for the fun of it--Taylor Instruments moved to Arden,
NC, many years ago and many of the key families who formed our parish
were either Taylor execs and employees or from a Westinghouse group
that came about the same time from Buffalo, NY. The Taylor plant was
one I went by almost daily on my rounds. Felt sort of odd, as I had
used Taylor products most of my life in the orchards before that part
of my bio came to an end. Now I was seeing where those were made.
