Re: SIB: neighboring plants vastly different

Hi Dan,

'Butter and Sugar' blooms well here but others have
said it is not a good bloomer or garden subject for
them. It does tend to brown up earlier than most
Siberians (at least here) but this is too early to be
'brown'. My advice, for what is is worth, is to cut
off 
the dead leaves and water until the first frost.
'Butter & Sugar' is sold in most garden centers around
here and I bought one at Walmart to see if it was B &
S. It wasn't. Advice is to order Sibes from a
specialized iris source to be sure of getting the real
thing. You are in a good climate for Siberians, btw.

A 16" circle is not nearly enough for three Siberians.
They like to spread their roots (and wiggle their toes
;-) and the clumps by themselves are large. I plant
Sibes 12" apart each other or other plants (or at
least I try to..sometimes space is at a premium). I
have two crowded beds of medians that do better
planted closer than Sibes. Also, Sibes (like most
irises) like/need at least 5-6 hrs. of sun. Full sun
is best.  And you are correct on the water - the first
year it is critical for good bloom in subsequent
years. Also, a loose mulch like pine needles is
helpful to keep dampness around the plant. Just the
opposite of bearded... ;-)
