Hey Dave,
Your question is not ignorant. I will attempt to answer it from my
perspective, and perhaps some others will add their comments.
The convention guest plants are typically donated to the host club that is
sponsoring a garden tour. Hybridizers send their plants to be grown and
displayed in the tour gardens. Hybridizers benefit greatly from this
exposure. The convention benefits from having these new plants as part of
the tour.
When I send my daylilies to conventions, I always allow for the host garden
to keep one of each plant. Often times there is increase from what I sent.
If I have not yet introduced the plant, then I may ask for the increase to
be sent back to me. Often times, I allow for my increase to auctioned
during the convention or donate all the increase for the host club to do
with what they want. They may then share the plant freely with the
convention volunteers, auction at their club, auction on the internet, or do
whatever they choose.
Everyone wins in this. I wonder why AIS does not allow for the internet
auction of such plants if the hybridizer has freely donated the plant and
not asked for its return. I do not understand this. There is much goodwill
to be achieved in these situations.
