That is why the reply goes on top of the quoted message, unless there is
some reason to clip and quote in the body of your reply. Those who have been
following the thread don't need to read it, though they may refer to it, and
those who have not been following the thread have something there to hang
their hat on if the reply is confusing when taken out of context.
Take a look at the bottom, and you will see Ellen's entire message. I'm not
replying to specific points, so the whole thing is underneath. What Gesine
should probably be more worried about are messages that arrive in a format
other than plain text. HTML and RTF messages typically use two times the
space of a plain text message, often more. The HTML messages are
particularly prone to introducing malware to your machine, whether it be a
simple web bug that grabs information for the sender, a trojan, or a virus.
You can hide a lot in HTML.
If there were several points in a message that I was replying to, I might
take the points out and make them a part of my reply thusly:
> This is point one that I am replying to. If I had more than one line they
would all be preceded by a right arrow.
This would be the reply to the point above.
> and there could be another point--I'm not neat and probably would not clip
the beginning of the line if it had no

And here is more of my reply.
If I am replying to a message that is in a RTF or HTML format, I'll change
the format to plain text. And, of course, a short sweet signature indicates
the end of my babbling along and helps to separate my text form the original
message text that may follow.

On the contrary, I think it is far easier to clip the messages
than send the whole blasted thing to folks who have read it
already.
