Hi,
My name is Linda and I live in California. I have grown irises in my back yard for at least 20 years but a few years ago but husband and I decided we might want to have an iris farm when we retire. To that end we've been "farming" a small plot in our town besides the irises in our yard, trying to acquire different bearded irises. From 60 that we planted 2 years ago we now have 400!
I have a couple of questions for seasoned iris growers. We planted our irises on ridges with the narrow gullies between them so their feet would stay dry. We've just dug up our whole plot to divide what we have and will now replant in the same plot. We're thinking of putting our rows in a different direction though just so all of the same earth won't be used.
For a small plot is it absolutely necessary to put the irises up on ridges?
We're adding soil amendments to enrich the soil? That won't make it too rich, will it?
And I've read we should dip each rhizome in fungicide before we replant it (or sell off our extras). Is that true? The reason I ask is that on the bottle of fungicide that I got the directions indicated to NOT use it on stressed plants or before transplanting, so now I'm confused. Any input from those who have been down this path?
Thanks. Looking forward to interacting with you all Linda
