Ellen, I'm not surprised to hear that Marky Smith's things don't like all that
rain.  Her home is in the Yakima Valley of central Washington, (my home
territory) where the climate is dry and the avg. yearly precip. is low.   To
go all summer with only one or two little rain showers is quite normal, and to
have 3/4" at one time is a downpour.  Before irrigation it was all sagebrush,
greasewood, and similar semi-desert plants.
