I now pot before planting in the garden.
Mike, thank for your response. (on the preen)
About the potting! Do you just pop them out of the pot and plant soil and all? This is the way I was doing it before I moved. Many that I transplanted here were done this way.We pot all new arrivals because its a 100+ outside. They stay in pots till days are in the low 80's,about late October. Potting mix is fast draining mix of Perlite,Vermiculite,Peat and coarse sand.We use coffee filters to keep the soil in the pot and a pinch of Phosphate in the bottom for root growth. They get a shot of B1 transplant solution a day after potting and again when set in the ground. Anything that doesn't show new growth in 3-4 days get watched for rot,etc
A friend of mine says he thinks they do poorly when planted this way . . . something about planting the potting soil. I've a couple of 50 foot (double) rows that I planted this way and they aren't looking as good (for now) as ones that I planted bare rooted.Considering plants don't like to have their roots disturbed I would prefer to skip any transplanting I could. Our potted iris are usually root bound by the time its cool enough to transplant so they would have been better off if we could have gotten them in the ground sooner.

I'd decided not to pot any more. I've got plenty of space and a roll of shade cloth AND it's been a mild summer for the most part. At this point, it's extra work that I don't have time to do.
What has been the experience of those potting new arrivals for later planting? I appreciate any and all feedback.
