Re:beginner question no 2

Thanks for all the advice.  I live in Nashville, Tennessee so I think I am in zone 6.  I believe all my irises are bearded (at least the ones that bloomed were, and the foliage on the other non-bloomers is the same as the bloomers).  I am going to thin this bed out drastically in the next couple of weeks and maybe that will help some.  I do plan on giving the discards to others.  The rhizomes that I plan to keep should not be "mushy" or damp, correct?  They should be dry and solid when I replant?  Thanks
