I'm curious if any others have experience planting deep in hot summer
climates, and if there are opinions on weather surface planting (more
sunburn, dry out faster, hotter), or deeper (more even moisture, cooler,

the heat of summer?

You might try writing to Rick Tasco and Roger Duncan at Superstition Iris Gardens. Their business is named Superstition because they started the business in view of Superstition Mountains in Arizona. I am sure they would have some comments and advice. Their email:

I don't know how many have noticed, but bearded Iris often dive deeper on
their own for the first few seasons after planting.

That has not been my experience at all. I have plenty of rhizomes growing at the surface on 1, 2 and 3 year clumps here in the San Francisco Bay area.

Different environs could cause different effects. The one constant that I have found over the years that I have been doing irises is that very often different things work differently in different areas and the best thing to do is find someone local to where you are to get advice from.
