Re: winter potting

Char, I don't really mind the loss of increase. They
are all large plants with 6-8 increase (most 2 to 3
inches long allready) on them and the cost is quite
small.  I'd rather give a large potted plant with 6 or
more full fans at these conferences and to people who
come in June to see them bloom, then a large single
plant I've spent years building up stock on.  

I simply don't have room to plant as many plants I've
ordered, also, in May and April, I can't get into the
garden to dig plants, they aren't ready to be messed
with.  However, a potted plant I move to a 100 foot
greenhouse the end of February would be a nice plant I
figure come May and April, much larger than the garden
plants just coming out of winter dormancy.  The beds I
keep frozen till around April 1 with the flax cover...


So, I have ordered in 32 varieties of plants with over
500 plants of each one, and a fourth or so of each
variety I wanted to pot up and sell as a unit in June
(all increases included).

Nurseries do this and sell the pot for upwards of $15
here and I won't ask near that price.  I know it's not
the traditional way for iris gardens to grow plants,
but for these varieties I can get in, I want to try to
make it work.  They'll be huge plants but that's ok. 
Customers like that and they'll be picking them out
themselves.  They can take them home with them. 
That's the idea behind it.

I still will provide plants in August via USPS for the
other 1,800 varieties I'll have next year, but I'll
have 61 varieties (combining the new plants with some
stock I've built up for bulk plants) all potted up and
ready to go for people next year.  That's the plan
anyway, I hope to make it work.

A little crazy, but I think it's a good idea.. The
only problem is the winter...  I think...  Maybe...
