Re: HIST: ID-ing unknowns

Yep, that has worked for some of the irises I have gotten from this
lady. I find what I think is a match, then order one for comparison. I
don't have a complete collection of Schreiner's catalogs, but have
several spanning the 60s & 70s. I've ordered BARCELONA for comparison
with the tough old variegata, based on haft markings, pedigree (it's a
half sib to LIGHTNING RIDGE, another old toughie here), even tho the
checklist description doesn't really match. Grasping at straws....But
don't see anything to try to ID the bronze-rust one.

At least one of the irises I've gotten from her is not in the catalogs
that I have - CORAL BEAUTY (thanks to Chuck Chapman, I think, for ID -
verified by purchased plant). Two possibilities - she's gotten at least
one iris from another source, or it was only sold by Schreiners for 3 or
4 years in a time frame for which I don't happen to have a catalog.

<...if you think they are from Schreiners then maybe you can
look thru old Schreiner's catalogs. I am sure that
there are lots of old
copies out there because none of us would ever throw
away those iris
                   pictures!! Lorraine Nicholson>
