Stalks five and six are now in bloom on old reliable 'Immortality,' on a
modest sized-half-clump reset last year dirt and all despite no particular
extra care other than ample organics added to a practically sterile
red-acid-clay soil new to iris three seasons past. There's been from two to
four blooms open any one day now for weeks, with no sign of stopping. First
frost isn't due for a number of weeks yet. The oldest stalk has swelling
open-pollinated pods growing where they were. I have no idea if they're empty
balloons or not.
The clump is planted right beside our newly paved drive and in plain sight of
a very busy county road (Avery Creek Road) some thirty or so feet from the
clump. I think at least a few of the passers by--including a lot of
bikers--have noted it. More good rebloomers would be a gracious addition to
that bed. It gives me ideas.
"I didn't know Irises *did* that!" is a frequently heard comment.
The foliage doesn't show a trace of bacterial blight or leaf spot. Many other
cv's do. I wish more of my irises behaved as well as this.
I grow increasingly fond of 'Immortality' as time goes on. Lloyd, you sure
have added something to iris history with this rebloomer. Thanks!
