Amen to that Anner and Neil!
I'd buy a horticulturally sound "ordinary" iris over the prettiest red if I had to watch the red one die during one of our northeast Wisconsin winters.
I just brought in a whole lunch sack of Everlast Iris markers....toe tags.....and recorded yet another 15 extinctions from my iris beds this year. Like Neil, I have problems with a January thaw followed by a very cold March and April. Last winter, the heavy snow cover melted in January with no place for the water to go and when it froze, we had a sheet of ice over an inch thick that covered all the gardens. We lost perennials we've never lost before. The glacier stayed for almost 3 weeks and I suspect smothered all the plants beneath it. I sure won't be digging iris and re-spacing them this year, as there are way too many spaces now. This is Darwinizing in the extreme.

Anner Whitehead's comment, "Boring as it may sound, I personally hope some
of the best energies of the best minds are bent toward developing enhanced
horticultural soundness in the coming stuff" is a matter far more important
than a red-red "Crayola" red (as Anner quite aptly put it) iris.
but both of
us suffer from winter damage due to activation of the plants in warm weeks,
with hard frosts following with little time for the plants to adjust. >
