I've had very good luck with a mixed bed... with the trick being to leave enough room for the iris to remain well aired.... I have it fronted by stokes asters, and backed by garden phlox, with some of the non-invasive tradescantias along the back corners.... and then spread in a number of tall annual seeds that are tall and have great flowers, but don't cast a lot of shade....
Love in a Mist, Clarkia, etc....
