SPECIES X: CLOWN PANTS

Thanks Linda.
I'm glad to hear that CLOWN PANTS is doing that well
for you. Especially since your conditions are
challenging (to put it mildly). I'm especially
encouraged that it sent up repeat stalks for you --
that makes at least three of us now, who've seen it do
that [Me, Greg McCullough and you]. It's not the
typical fall rebloom, but more of a "stutter" --
initiating more stalks as the first ones are finishing
or just finished. Neil Mogensen had told me that
timofejewii X variegata (which I purchased years ago
from Ohio Gardens) had a similarly long bloom period
for him. I hadn't ever noticed that. But, if I've
managed to save the single fan that I still have of
that hybrid, I hope to eventually cross it with CLOWN
PANTS -- so that I can try to exagerate that repeating
bloom habit.
I was too busy to do any hybridizing with CLOWN PANTS
this season, but I did get a chance to do some crosses
with a few of its babies [the several that had
rebloomed last fall]. And these rebloomers are growing
every bit as vigorously (or maybe even more so) than
CLOWN PANTS itself. I sure hope they rebloom again
this year.
Thanks again for the feedback,
Take care, Tom

Tom sent me a note offlist, but I figured I'd give
some public praise for his CLOWN PANTS, after posting
that photo last year of its case of summer crud
(shared by all here).

CLOWN PANTS is growing like a weed here. Let me
rephrase that - in this record setting drought and
continuous heat, it is growing much better than any of
the weeds here, and is certainly a <lot> greener. Plus
with the ongoing drought, not a speck of summer crud
(i.e., near defoliating leaf spot).

Plus it came thru the late freeze with flying colors -
not only bloomed after the freeze, but sent up more
stalks after the first ones were open.

I thought I had a photo of it blooming - will see if I
can find it.
