I'm not positive, but I believe it's named after Betty Dunn, who first suggested the iris be adopted by advocacy groups for the mentally ill as a symbol of courage and hope.
The idea of using the iris comes from Van Gogh's painting "Irises", which depicts the garden of the Saint-Remy mental asylum in France where Van Gogh was a patient.
