Yes, Griff. That's why I posted it here - wanted to give a heads up to be careful with Firefox upgrades. Be more careful than I was!

For some reason, this Firefox upgrade showed up without asking if I wanted it this time. It usually asks, I usually wait awhile. But this one downloaded automatically, then installed next time I booted. The message about plugins wasn't explicit enough for me to realize that it had disabled/wasn't compatible with the current version of Trend Micro on my computer. By the time I found out what it meant, it was too late - I was already infected. At least I got off easy - turned it off before it trashed anything, but still had to take it in to be cleaned. A major hassle out in the country.

So now I'm ready to change browser or antivirus or both. Trend Micro has offered a free upgrade, but they say it's compatible with Firefox 5, not with 6.

thanks for the tip re: Microsoft Security Essential, Chad. Will check it out.

What about Chrome or Ubuntu? Apparently can run Ubuntu on CD without uninstalling Windows. Has its own built in antivirus stuff??

for now, I'm grumpily using Explorer with trend micro. Trying to find/remember/change all my passwords.
