Re: Introduction--Julie Allen

The attached was sent to me by private mail but I'm sure Julie would like
to hear from Donna -- close your eyes, all others!!

Julie: Hi. I am between Seattle and Tacoma, and I think that if you
plant your iris on elevated ground, make sure there is no puddling of
water around the roots and rhizome you will do ok. Another person wrote
that it would be November when you moved. I think it would be more like
October wouldn't it be?

I have planted as late as October - but didn't have enough information
about the elevation of the soil then. I lost a few due to rot. The
Siberians love water and it is recommended that they get plenty. I have
no advice about potting or planting - I have had three Siberians in pots
for about 1 year, and none of them bloomed. I plan to plant them this month.
Go easy on the fertilizer if you plant late. Prepare the soil well tho.
If your roots are long when you dig, trim them back, before planting,
because all the roots you see will be replaced with new ones in about 2
weeks. I learned that little trick - finally, after never being told.
You will notice that the growers rhizomes are short rooted - Right? That
is because they trim them.

Also, do not cut back the green fans (leaves) - unless they fall over,
turn yellow etc. I am learning - and I hope it helps you.
