The queston first is when to do it. I got mine in the spring and
started germinating them right away in peat pots in trays. They sat
for the longest time and finally I put them outside in a very wet
bed. Nothing happened for a couple of weeks. Finally I put sphagnum
peat moss (to make and acid environment) under the little pots and
got little green sprouts. Next
problem in this climate is overwintering them since the ground was
very wet and would freeze solid. Advice said to move them to drier
ground but I didn't do this. Next spring there were 18 seedlings
(out of the original 21). They grew slowly. The following year one
of the clumps produced a flower but the rest were still to small
small. This year quite a few of the clumps produced flower(s) one
of them red with white stripes. Pity I don't know which varieties
were the parents so I won't be able to register them. Don't know if
it would be legal for me to do so. If you aare going to start this
now maybe you should keep them inside for the winter. Or keep the
seeds until the spring. Does anyone know how to preserve Japanese
iris seeds over the winter? Anyway have fun!
