Ruth,
If the rhizomes your friend received are large and otherwise
healthy, they are probably perfectly okay. Tell her to dry them out for a
day in the sun. As an extra precaution, she might want to give them
a 10% chlorine bleach bath---no more than 10 minutes. Rinse them well
before planting. Water and fertilize them well after planting and enjoy the
new blooms next spring!
