THIEVES RESIDE IN WASHINGTON STATE TOO!
The very first year I planted iris, and only two days after they were in
the ground, three of my most choice rhizomes were janked out of the soil
and were GONE. I say yanked, maybe just gently pulled would be a better
description, because they had not settled in yet or anchored.
I could not believe it! I have several neighbors - none of which are
gardeners! But the closest neighbor was paid a visit by their daughter
from Alabama during this time, and I was informed that she "loves iris"
and grows some there. When I shared my loss story with my neighbors,
they said that squirrels probably took them!
My husband put up an electric fence with a sign on it warning injury, and
I took some extra old fashioned rhizomes, and planted them in the ground
in another area where I had seen squirrels. I placed them there so I
could see if they dissappeared and if the squirrels could possibly be the
culprits. They were never touched!
So, the original rhizomes were replaced - and it never has happened again!
Aren't people strange?
Have a good one, Nicki from Puget Sound. BY THE WAY - ISN'T THERE ANYONE
ELSE ON HERE FROM WASHINGTON STATE? WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU!!!!!
