Bernice Miller's catalog talked about pH and tall bearded iris - she said
that some needed higher pH and calcium (mostly bred in the arid west), others
needed more acid conditions (mostly from the wetter east?), and others didn't
seem to care.

Some of mine are growing right next to a huge pile of limestone gravel which
has been there for years.  CUP RACE has been steadily migrating under the
pile.
